Evergreen College, a state-funded college located in Olympia Washington, struggled to re-open on Monday after weeks of death threats, race-fueled attacks, and property damage committed by the “progressive” student thugs they created.

Evergreen College: A failed experiment in “progressive” education

At the height of the “hippie” movement in the 1960s, the State of Washington signed legislation to create a new 4-year college in southwestern Washington called “Evergreen College”.

The college’s creators did not want to create “just another four-year college”. They opted to abandon tried and true education methods. Instead, they wanted to unshackle their “educational thinking from traditional patterns.” Faculty were encouraged to think beyond simply awarding letter grades and, instead, provide “meaningful and constructive feedback through narrative evaluations”; liberal-speak for awarding everyone a participation trophy while ignoring actual academic achievement.

Students attending the college would be indoctrinated in the liberal trifecta that is entitlement, racial hatred, and disrespect for the law, all in the name of “progressive” education.

“A Day of Absence” – College-sanctioned racist event

Every year, the college subjected its students and staff to an event called “A Day of Absence”. Under the alleged noble-sounding purpose of trying to help their “privileged”, “entitled” white students appreciate their black peers, black students and faculty were asked to stay home for one day. Not recognizing that the tradition was, by its very practice of “excluding” one group based on the color of their skin, a racist event, the college subjected minority students and staff to the event year after year.

Professor Bret Weinstein

In May of this year, however, black students demanded that all white students and faculty leave while they remained on campus.

Over night, the college suddenly realized the racist nature of the event. Bret Weinstein, a white biology professor, sent the event organizers an email expressing his disagreement, and informing them of his intent to not participate.

“There is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space to highlight their vital and under-appreciated roles… and a group or coalition encouraging another group to go away” – Professor Bret Weinstein, Evergreen College

In his email, Weinstein explained his reasoning, “There is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space to highlight their vital and under-appreciated roles… and a group or coalition encouraging another group to go away.” Weinstein added, “The first is a forceful call to consciousness which is, of course, crippling to the logic of oppression. The second is a show of force, and an act of oppression in and of itself.”

Weinstein was entirely correct, however, the students had been indoctrinated for years to believe that any opinion expressed by others must be less valid then theirs. Even worse, they were taught that any opinion expressed by a white person was de-facto racism.

In the eyes of Evergreen’s progressives, Professor Weinstein was guilty of both sins. He had expressed an opinion that differed from theirs, and he was white (and therefore automatically presumed to be a “racist”). Predictably, hundreds of incensed students descended on Weinstein’s office and demanded that he resign. They accused him of being a “racist”, and demanded he “apologize” for his alleged white supremacy.

Weinstein attempted to engage the students, but the students were in no mood to listen. 50 years of progressive education at Evergreen College had conditioned their students to believe that only their opinion mattered and any opinion voiced by a white person was racist.

Even worse, the liberal cocoon in which they lived had taught them that they were “entitled” to anything they wanted. That someone had dared to say “no” to their demands simply enraged their progressive sensibilities.

Library occupied, roving gangs of student thugs with baseball bats threaten staff

Hundreds of students took over the library building and barricaded themselves inside with furniture to prevent the police from entering. Other students began roaming campus halls and sidewalks with baseball bats, threatening white students and faculty who refused to go home, and damaging college property. Weinstein tweeted that several people had been injured by the students but were afraid to report the incident to administration.

A anonymous threat to “shoot up the campus” because of Weinstein’s refusal to leave was made to the police; a threat that ultimately forced the school to close.

Eventually, Evergreen police told Weinstein he had to leave campus for his own safety.

College administrators bewildered and confused

Throughout this crisis, the Evergreen College administration has been the very example of progressive leadership; confused, inept, and incapable of even recognizing the underlying cause of the crisis.

Rather than acknowledging the failed liberal ideologies that created the crisis (racial exclusion, disrespect for authority, and entitlement), the school has instead decided to “double-down” on its liberal efforts. In the minds of the Evergreen College administrators, the students must be acting this way because their white teachers and peers are not sufficiently sorry for the heinous crime of being white.

Instead of re-assessing the wisdom of a school-sanctioned event that segregated people based on the color of their skin, and their apparent tolerance of student entitlement and disregard for the opinion of others, the college is instead investigating Professor Weinstein. They believe Weinstein may have “endangered” others by refusing to leave campus with his tail between his legs, as any good progressive should have done when confronted by a self-entitled, racially-incensed mob of students.

College President refuses to punish the students for their behavior, instead apologizes for his own “micro-aggression”

College President George Bridges has refused to take disciplinary action against any of the students, and has instead apologized for his own “micro-agressions” while attempting to speak with the students. The aggression he was accused of committing? Gesturing with his hands while speaking. Bridges also excused the students from any homework or academic assignments so they could continue their thuggery without worrying about their grades.

Steve Coffman, a history student at the college, describes student life at Evergreen College in bleak terms. There has been “a breakdown of civility, a breakdown of willingness to communicate and find common ground.” The students, he said, have been turned into “social justice McCarthyites”, using threats and intimidation to force others to their way of thinking, while ignoring the opinions of others.

One must wonder where the students learned such behavior.

Bill filed to de-fund the college

In response to the recent events at Evergreen College, Washington Representative Matt Manweller (R-Ellensburg) has introduced a bill, House Bill 2221, to remove state funding for the college.

House Bill 2221 will require Evergreen State College to transition into a private institution over five years. If passed, state lawmakers would begin to reduce state funding for the college by 20 percent each year over a five year period, until the college receives no state funds at all.

“We should not be spending taxpayer dollars on a public institution that condones and encourages this type of behavior. The state has plenty of other higher education institutions we can focus our resources on where students are interested in learning and the faculty is committed to actual academics.” Rep. Matt Manweller (R-Ellensburg)

“We should not be spending taxpayer dollars on a public institution that condones and encourages this type of behavior,” Manweller said. “The state has plenty of other higher education institutions we can focus our resources on where students are interested in learning and the faculty is committed to actual academics.”

Manweller has also sent a letter to the Washington State Human Rights Commission requesting a formal investigation of the college’s practices.
