(2ANEWS) – California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent proposal to amend the Constitution to restrict gun rights has been met with opposition from the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA). The CCRKBA has labeled this proposal  a “blatant attempt to eradicate individual rights from the Constitution” and called into question its efficacy in reducing gun violence.

The proposal submitted by Governor Newsom seeks to introduce several significant changes to the current federal laws regarding gun ownership. It puts forth an increase in the minimum age to purchase firearms from 18 to 21, a waiting period for all gun purchases, universal background checks for purchasing firearms, and a ban on so-called “assault weapons.”

The governor claims his main goal is to decrease gun violence by banning firearms that are considered to be the most dangerous. Despite little evidence that significant gun violence has been committed using assault rifles, Democratic lawmakers have called for stricter regulations on such firearms. Newsom also seeks to increase the age limit for gun ownership, claiming that younger individuals have been more prone to irresponsible shootings or accidents.

However, the CCRKBA has criticized the proposal, citing that it encroaches on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. According to the CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, the proposal “reeks of infringement on Second Amendment rights” and is unlikely to reduce gun violence. The CCRKBA believes that such restrictions on gun rights would only make it difficult for individuals to protect themselves in dangerous situations.

The proposal has ignited a debate on gun rights and control and is likely to face opposition from various interest groups. Supporters of the proposal, on the other hand, feel that the restrictions are necessary to curb gun violence and increase public safety.

Governor Newsom’s proposal comes after a series of high-profile shootings in California, a state known for having some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. The Governor’s proposal is likely to receive support from California Democrats who have consistently advocated for stricter gun control laws. However, the likelihood of the proposal passing remains unclear as it is yet to be deliberated in Congress.

The debate on gun rights and control is a divisive issue in the United States, with the country grappling with increasing violence in recent years. Governor Newsom’s proposal acknowledges this issue by blaming firearms. This proposal represents an effort to distract voters away from the failed, soft on crime policies that have played a major role the increase of crime in general, violent crime specifically. The proposal, is likely to face legal challenges in its implementation, with gun rights advocates arguing that it violates their rights.
